TGIF! Friday has arrived, and you couldn’t be more thrilled to greet the weekend. When 5:00 rolls around, you might be tempted to grab your friends and hit up your favorite bar. Or maybe you’d prefer to go home and melt into your couch with a glass of wine in one hand and a good book in the other. But hold on – there might be a better way to spend your Friday night. Have you considered squeezing in a post-work sweat session instead? We admit that it might not immediately spring to mind as a fun Friday night activity, but there are a few reasons that it’s a good idea. You’ll be way ahead of the game. If you tend to be health conscious, you might start your weekend with a Saturday morning workout. But what if you’ve stayed out late the night before and would rather sleep in? Skip the guilt, and work out on Friday night instead. Or, better yet, move your intense workout to Friday, and leave Saturday open for something more relaxing. A restorative yoga class is a blissful way to start your day. Zero crowds at the gym. If you’re used to working out on Saturday and Sunday, then you’re accustomed to fighting crowds at the gym. You might have to wait around for a treadmill to open up, or get locked out of one of your classes because it’s too full. Work out on Friday night instead, and you’ll find that the gym is pretty empty. You’ll be able to move through your workout quickly and efficiently, without fighting crowds or having to wait for others to finish using cardio equipment. Exercising at night has surprising health benefits. For many years, it was reported that exercising at night wasn’t as effective as working out in the morning. But recent research is proving this wrong. Studies have shown that people who work out at night tend to fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly through the night. Plus, what better way to blow off steam at the end of a hard work week than by lifting heavy or doing a boot camp workout? Bond with your friends (without the hangover). There’s no reason you have to go it alone. Grab some of your friends and hit the barbells instead of the bar. Try taking a group class together right after work, so that just in case you do still feel like going out afterward, you’re still home at a reasonable hour. Just remember that if you plan to rehydrate with margaritas, be sure you’re drinking lots of water, too. Friday night workouts might not sound too appealing on the surface, but they can actually improve the quality of your weekend. After all, is there anything better than sleeping in on a Saturday morning?
