All Or Nothing Thinking- Cheating Ourselves Out Of Our Own Health It happens, you just finished up a killer workout and you are looking for anything to refuel your body – including that bag of chips, and, oops, pretty much the whole container of guacamole. Or, maybe you snagged a cupcake for a co-workers birthday celebration, so you figure you may as well skip the workout because today is now a “cheat day.” And of course, there’s the, “I really just do not want to do anything but watch Netflix today” mood that leaves you skipping your workout entirely. All too often, and all too easily, we cheat ourselves of our own health and fitness by falling into “all or nothing” thinking . All or nothing thinking is exactly what it sounds like: you either eat kale and Greek yogurt and steel cut oats while conquering a five mile run and hot yoga daily, or you consume a container of cookies and sit on the couch all day. There is no in between, because we think it won’t make a difference. Oh, how wrong we are! All or nothing thinking is easy to fall into and can be a challenge to grow from. It is important to remember that every healthy choice you make adds up, just as every not-so-healthy choice does. Eating a bowl of ice cream, even a small bowl, every night for a week can lead to larger numbers on the scale. But, taking a 15 minute power walk every night for a week can have the opposite effect. While small healthy choices may seem pointless, the staggering effects make each choice worth the effort. So, next time you find yourself eating more than a few servings or justifying skipping a workout in your mind, catch yourself! Acknowledge each small effort and have faith that over time, you will begin to see and feel the benefits of those choices. You can break free from all or nothing thinking, one small choice at a time.
