Beat The Heat With Smart Beverage Choices As the warm weather starts flowing in, there’s no doubt your thirst will start increasing. But you do need to be careful what you are quenching your thirst with otherwise you could end up taking in calories that you shouldn’t. Many people don’t gain weight during the summer from the foods they are eating but rather, gain weight thanks to what they are drinking. Let’s look at a few of the smart beverage choices you can feel good about turning to. Water With Fruit One of the tastiest and easiest beverages to make this summer is flavored water. Rather than purchasing pre-made flavored water, which comes with plenty of additives and sweeteners, make your own. Get a big pitcher and in that pitcher, add a cup of strawberries, raspberries, or some orange segments. Let it sit for a good two or three hours and then serve. The fruit will add a nice light flavor to the water, making it easier to get down. Homemade Smoothies Homemade smoothies are another terrific option for keeping your beverage choice healthy and lean this summer. Prepare your own by mixing together whey protein powder, unsweetened almond milk, Greek yogurt, frozen fruit, and a little nut butter where needed. These can easily work for a meal replacement when your day gets a little too busy to prepare a traditional meal or snack. Crushed ‘Ice’ You can also easily make some ‘crushed ice’ to help cool down on a hot day. Place some cut up watermelon, berries, or any other fruit you desire in the freeze for about an hour or so. Then remove and using a wooden spoon, ‘crush it’. Add some sugar-free sparkling water and then stir. It’ll be a delicious icy beverage that you’re sure to enjoy. Iced Tea Finally, don’t overlook making your own iced tea. While you can purchase commercial iced tea, the problem there is that these blends are often very high in added sugar – and definitely not a healthy diet choice. Instead, prepare your own. Brew some hot tea and then place it in the fridge until it chills to your desired temperature. Add a few slices of lemon, some stevia and then serve. So there you have a few of the best summer beverages you can feel good about indulging in this season. Choose these and you won’t set your diet back.
