Why You Need To Enjoy Exercising To Achieve Results We’ve all been there at some point: you packed your gym bag, you had the best of intentions, but the desire is just not there. Whether you consider this reluctance to hit the gym a lack of motivation, burnout, or disinterest, the fact of the matter is that it’s hindering your results. Articles, books, magazines, and fitness gurus alike are always talking about the trifecta of clean eating, consistent exercise, and quality sleep to reach weight loss and fitness goals . If you’re feeling this negativity towards exercise and noticing a lack of results despite your dedication to the “trifecta,” you’re likely missing one key piece of the puzzle: enjoyment! Not Just Another Chore If you’re constantly pushing yourself through workouts that are not enjoyable to you, it’s inevitable that exercise will begin to feel like a chore . Rather than just another task to cross off your to-do list, the goal is to make exercise something you look forward to each day. A change in perspective can help with this. Often times we get into the mindset that we’re working out because we dislike the current state of our body or appearance. Try to rephrase this thought into “I’m working out because I love my body and want to take care of it and make it better.” A small, positive twist can make exercise that much more enjoyable. What else is on your to-do list? Groceries, bills, oil change, etc. These things are on that list because they have to get done. Exercise is on your list because you’ve chosen to make it a priority. What goal or thought got exercise onto that list in the first place? Think about why you made exercise a priority in the first place and your motivation will draw from there. Make it a Habit After reframing your thoughts on exercise, it’s time to figure out what you like and turn it into a habit. Are you going to spinning because everyone else is raving about it, only to find that you’re staring at the clock and mumbling about how uncomfortable the seat is? Or are you repetitively moving along on the treadmill only to realize what you thought felt like 2 miles was only ½ mile? Stop! If you force yourself into an exercise that you think you should be doing, and you don’t end up enjoying it, the dread of the next workout will hinder your results. That dread will turn into excuses to skip workouts, which will lead to a lack of motivation, and so on. There is no golden rule book of exercise that says you must go to spin class to achieve the body of your dreams. The only must is that you need to find something you enjoy and that bring you stress relief, time to focus on yourself, and a little sweat. Take a week or two to try new exercises until you find one you enjoy – go to Zumba, yoga, do a circuit workout, try a HIIT workout, foam roll, lift weights, hike, etc. Once you find a few things you love, put them into a rotating schedule. Hike on Mondays, lift weights on Wednesdays, and go to yoga on Fridays. Implementing a varied schedule will help keep your body guessing, create a habitual schedule for yourself, and give you a list of things to look forward to throughout the week. Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore, you simply need to take the time to find what you enjoy. Once you find something you love, whatever it may be, stick to it. If you notice you stop looking forward to that activity, try something new. Fitness is always evolving and there are always new activities to try!
