How To Set Goals That Deliver Unbeatable Results Goal setting is an important component of any healthy eating or exercise program as it gives you a sense of direction and can go a long way towards boosting your motivation. Too many people set a goal when they first start their program – a long term goal that is months away – and then simply never look back. It’s important that you continually re-evaluate your goals on a regular basis and ensure they are set up in a way that will yield maximal results. To help get you started, let’s go over a few basic rules to remember when setting goals to ensure yours are going to help you forge onward as you hope. Be Specific The first must-do is to be as specific as possible when setting your goals. For instance, never say you want to ‘lose weight’. That isn’t nearly specific enough. How much weight do you want to lose? Or even better, how much fat do you want to lose? Perhaps you will gain muscle and burn fat, but yet end up at the same weight. Remember that this does not mean failure in anyway. Just because the scale has not moved, you still have reached your goal because you have lost the fat you were going for. Likewise, don’t just state you want to get in shape. Be specific. How much do you want to squat? How quickly do you want to run a mile? Whatever forms of exercise you plan to do, set very specific goals for each one. This way, when you are doing that exercise, you know precisely, without question, what you are working toward. Set Short, Medium, and Long-Term Goals Next, it’s also important that you set a number of goals. While having that grand long-term goal you are working towards is great, most people will lose sight of it after so many weeks or months. Break that goal up. Have your long term goal (which could be anywhere from two to three months to one year away). Then have monthly goals that break that goal down into segments. Once you have your monthly goals set, then it’s time to set daily goals. That’s right – daily. Each day when you wake up, set one goal that you want to accomplish that day. This goal doesn’t have to be anything too extravagant and it should be something that you can reach with minimal effort. It could be drinking 10 glasses of water or doing one more set of lunges in the gym when you go. By setting and reaching these goals, you not only move yourself forward, but you also give yourself a sense of confidence that you can in fact reach the goals you have set for yourself. This will be very important for your success. The more you believe in yourself, the more likely you are to make those other goals a reality. Think About Your Resources As you go about setting these goals, it’s also essential that you think about your resources. Will you need to find a dietician? Or perhaps you need to find a fitness trainer? Look at what type of people you may need to assist you and make sure that you do have access to them. Likewise, you’ll also need to have access to whatever equipment you may need to reach your goals as well. This could be a gym, a home gym, a local running track, or whatever you may need. If you don’t have the resources necessary to see success, you’re literally shooting yourself in the foot before you even begin. Set A Re-Evaluation Timeline It’s also a must that you set a re-evaluation timeline. How often will you stop and look at these goals to make sure they are still applicable? Goals change. Don’t feel bad about this. Sometimes something happens in life that changes your priorities and that’s completely okay. Just relax and know that you will set new goals that are more applicable to your life as it is now. It is important that you do adjust your goals however as nothing will kill motivation faster than working towards a goal that really isn’t all that important to you any longer. Consider Joining A Fitness Community Finally, you might also want to consider joining a fitness community of sorts and making your goals public. When you put them out there, this can go a long way towards helping you feel more accountable. Now other people will be ‘watching’ so to speak and will be excited to see your results as well. Plus, they can offer you support through the hard times, which can also go a long way towards encouraging you to keep seeing success. If you put these steps in action in your own goal-setting plan, you can feel confident that you will be on track to seeing great long-term results. Goal setting does take some time, but it’s time very well spent. About the Author: FHMatch , all-in-one `Business in a Box’!
