It can be a hugely rewarding occupation where you get to work directly with individuals on a one-to-one basis and every day is different. But before you commit yourself to this area of work, it worth getting to know a little bit more about the profession and what you can expect. Here are six things that you didn’t know about having a career as a personal trainer. 1. Qualifications improve your employability enormously It can be easy to believe that all you need to be a personal trainer is an understanding of how to use gym equipment and a body in shape to impress clients. Of course, there are things that can help, but in truth, like any industry, if you really want to get ahead then it is important that you have to invest time in education and qualifications. Qualifications in personal training not only provide you with the ability to get your foot in the door in job interviews, but also equip you with useful information that will make you more knowledge on the subject and ensure it is easier for you to do the job. 2. Personal trainers only need to think about exercise There are plenty of myths hanging around personal training , and one of the most commonly heard is that a personal trainer is only responsible for designing a workout and exercise routine for their clients. Whilst it is obviously a key part of the job, any client looking to achieve weight loss or body transformation needs to also make changes to their diet. Personal trainers need to have a good understanding of nutrition and be confident in creating bespoke meal plans to for their clients, as well as providing tips for better health. 3. Trainers need to pay close attention to their own health Working as a personal trainer comes with a range of challenges that can make it very difficult for you to stay healthy. It might be your assumption that working as a personal trainer will actually ensure you get healthier – but unusual working hours, eating when you can, and not having the time for your own workout regime all conspire to make it harder. You need to ensure that you make time for yourself – clients won’t want to work with a personal trainer who doesn’t look healthy. 4. Clients don’t need to work out everyday You might assume that one of the key aspects of your clients reaching their weight loss or muscle building goals is that they should work out every day. Perhaps this is something that you do and you believe it has always been successful for you – so that’s something that you should recommend to your clients, right? Well, it actually appears that this might not be the best course of action for most people. It’s fine to do some sort of exercise every day, but it is important to vary the intensity and length of sessions . Your body needs recovery time to get the most benefit out of very heavy sessions, so it is a good idea to create a plan for your clients that cycles between options such as extended workouts, light jogging, interval training, a short cycle and even the odd rest day. 5. Trainers avoid rehydrating with sports drinks As a personal trainer you will learn very quickly that there are some products that are sold to us as good for our health, but that really aren’t what people should be consuming. And sports drinks are a great example of this. Whilst they may well full of electrolytes useful for rehydration, they are also generally packed with sugar. The vast majority of personal trainers rehydrate with good, old fashioned water. 6. You can legitimately change lives Clients all have goals and if you can give them the tools and knowledge to complete them , it can lead to them living happier and more fulfilled lives. Whether they are training for a marathon, gaining muscle mass or just want to lose some weight, your role as a personal trainer can make a huge difference to them.
